WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) -- In an interview with E! News, "Today" host Hoda Kotb revealed that Matt Lauer sent her a text congratulating her on the promotion to main anchor.
"He was sweet this morning. Certain texts popped up, and there was one from Matt: 'Congratulations!' And he said some nice words," Kotb said. "It meant the world to me to hear from him on that. It was really nice."
Guthrie and Kotb have been in communication with Lauer since the "Today" veteran was fired for sexual misconduct.
"Matt is really focused on his family, and I think that's where his heart is and that's where it should be," Guthrie said. "We've kept in touch and we've all been reaching out, and, you know...I don't think there's anyone who would be more thrilled than Matt to see Hoda in this role. He adores Hoda and he knows how good she is and so I know that to be true."
On Tuesday morning, "Today" host Savannah Guthrie announced Kotb as her new co-anchor during the 7 and 8 a.m. hours. Kotb will also continue to co-host the fourth hour of the show with Kathie Lee Gifford for the time being.
When the new anchor duo spoke to People Magazine about the new transition, they revealed they said a prayer when they saw each other for the first time since Lauer's firing.
"And I remembered going into Savannah's dressing room, and we, like, had a real moment because that's what you do when something like that happens," Kotb said. "We held hands in our office and said a prayer, I won't forget it, I said you know, I said to Savannah after that prayer, I said, like, 'this is gonna...we're gonna make it through this together.'"
Guthrie also says her heart was broken by the news - and that it still is.
"We are family, and we do love each other, and families do go through hard times, and when that happens in good families, you just get closer. You pull together and you focus on the foundation and what keeps you together. I think that’s what we’ve all been trying to do," Guthrie said. "And for me, I just am trying to get comfortable with how complicated the feelings around all of it are, and it is complicated. And just trying to have love and compassion for everyone concerned.”
