PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) – Aviation Gin is raising a glass to Peloton after a recent advertisement went viral overnight.
This week, Peloton is in the spotlight for criticism over its recent commercial for its exercise bicycle. The advertisement shows a woman’s husband gifting her with a Peloton bike. Over the next year, the woman records her time spent on the bike and shows the video to her husband on the bike-gifting anniversary.
Many feel the commercial is promoting that a woman must routinely exercise to earn her husband’s favor. The ad has been called sexist, a “symbol of the patriarchy" and some say it depicts a controlling relationship.
This week, Business Insider reports Peloton’s stock plunged 15 percent in three days as the backlash against the ad keeps coming.
Needless to say, it hasn’t been a good week for Peloton.
But, one company’s advertising trash is now another’s treasure.
Friday night, Aviation Gin owner Ryan Reynolds tweeted a commercial featuring the same actress from the Peloton ad – Monica Ruiz. She’s sitting at a bar with a glazed-over look in her eyes. She’s surrounded by two friends and has a glass of gin in front of her.
The friends look concerned and eager to comfort her. One says, “You’re safe here.”
The three women clink glasses, and cheer “to new beginnings,” before Ruiz gulps down her martini glass full of gin. Her friend then passes her another.
Reynolds captioned his tweet, “Exercise bike not included.”
Those four words have been retweeted more than 40,000 times with more than 263,000 likes.
