SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Here we are, the first Tuesday of 2021. I wish I could tell you that everything felt different. At least we have a few new release films to distract ourselves with.

  • Three Films by Luis Buñuel - If you're looking for a filmmaker too timid to assert an opinion, Luis Buñuel is the last person you should invite into your conversations. This new Criterion Collection release includes Buñuel's final films, "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie," "The Phantom of Liberty," and "That Obscure Object of Desire." Buñuel won an Academy Award for "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie," a surreal dinner party where the food never arrives and the upper class attendees endure a series of absurd incidents. The social commentary is scathing. "The Phantom of Liberty" is one of the filmmaker's more unusual films as it moves through twelve chapters and as many protagonists as the narrative skips through time. Buñuel's final film, "That Obscure Object of Desire," is an adaption of "The Woman and the Puppet," a classic French tale about an older man who falls for a younger woman who is disinterested in his advances. Buñuel being Buñuel, the younger woman is played by two alternating actresses.
  • Love and Monsters - Dylan O’Brian stars as Joel, a lovesick man who isn't about to let the apocalypse (or its massive bug creatures) stand in the way of finding his long-lost girlfriend who lives 80 miles away. Did I happen to mention that Joel hasn't seen said girlfriend in nearly a decade? Joel's a romantic. "Love and Monsters" is B-movie that is nearly as ambitious as its protagonist (equally successful as well). It's more than a little silly. It was one of my favorite viewing experiences of 2020. • Honest Thief - Liam Neeson stars in this standard action drama about a thief who falls in love and decides to put his thieving ways behind him by handing over his stolen fortune to the FBI. The FBI, however, decides they'd rather just take the money and run. "Honest Thief" is a prototypical Neeson action film. (Full Review)
  • Yellow Rose - Eva Noblezada stars as Rose, an undocumented Filipina teen living in a small Texas town, who dreams of being a country music star. When her mother is taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Rose flees to Austin where she'll have to learn to survive and chase her dreams all on her own.
  • Mystery Road: Series 2 - "Mystery Road" is a spin-off from Ivan Sen's feature films "Mystery Road" and "Goldstone." The story centers on Jay Swan, an Indigenous Australian detective, who is asked to solve various crimes. This season focuses on a pair of missing ranch farmhands.
  • Vera: Set 10 - Brenda Blethyn returns for a tenth season of detective drama "Vera" as Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope from the popular crime novels written by Ann Cleeves.
  • Girl -The latest from Bella Thorne sees the actress starring as a young woman who travels back to her hometown to confront, possibly kill, her abusive father. When she arrives, she discovers he's already been murdered.
